Aftercare & Healing FAQs

Answers to common questions about cleaning, healing timelines, and what to expect after ear piercing.

When can I change the starter earrings

Starter earrings should stay in place for at least 6 weeks for earlobe piercings. Removing them too early can cause the piercing to close or become irritated.

Clean the piercing twice daily using sterile saline or a piercing aftercare solution. Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or harsh antiseptics as they can irritate the tissue and delay healing.

Yes. Mild redness, tenderness, and swelling during the first few days are normal as the body begins the healing process. These symptoms usually improve within a few days.

Possible signs include:

  • increasing redness or warmth
  • swelling that worsens
  • thick yellow or green discharge
  • significant pain
  • fever

If these symptoms occur, consult a healthcare provider.

What NOT to Do

❌ Do Not Twist or Rotate Earrings

Twisting can:

  • Irritate the healing tissue
  • Introduce bacteria into the piercing
  • Delay healing

Best practice:
Leave earrings in place and only touch when cleaning.

❌ Do Not Remove Earrings Too Early

Removing starter earrings before healing is complete can:

  • Cause the hole to close quickly
  • Trap bacteria inside the piercing
  • Lead to irritation or infection

Guideline: Keep earrings in for the full 6–8 week healing period

❌ Do Not Use Harsh Cleaning Products

Avoid:

  • Alcohol
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Antibiotic ointments

These can:

  • Dry out the skin
  • Disrupt natural healing
  • Cause irritation

Use only: Sterile saline or approved aftercare solution

❌ Do Not Touch Earrings Unnecessarily

Frequent touching:

  • Transfers bacteria from hands
  • Increases risk of infection
  • Irritates the area

Rule: Only touch with clean hands during cleaning

❌ Do Not Swim Too Soon

Avoid:

  • Pools
  • Lakes
  • Hot tubs

for the first 7–10 days

Water can contain bacteria that:

  • Enter the healing piercing
  • Increase infection risk

❌ Do Not Apply Pressure to the Ears

Be careful with:

  • Tight hats or headbands
  • Sleeping on the piercing
  • Rough towel drying

Pressure can cause:

  • Irritation
  • Swelling
  • Piercing bumps

❌ Do Not Change Earrings Prematurely

Switching earrings too early can:

  • Irritate the piercing channel
  • Introduce bacteria
  • Reset healing progress

Wait until fully healed (6–8 weeks minimum)

❌ Do Not Ignore Worsening Symptoms

If symptoms are:

  • Getting more painful
  • Increasing in redness or swelling
  • Producing thick discharge

Do not wait—seek medical advice
